At Klimaatmuseum, the urgency of climate change is translated into art. The Amsterdam Law Hub, in collaboration with the museum, has created an exhibition on climate justice, based on the scientific research of Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh (Associate Professor of Sustainability Law, UvA).

Art About Human Rights Violations

The concrete idea for this exhibition emerged during the celebration of our five-year anniversary, where we invited our community to contribute their thoughts. Based on the scientific research of Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh (Associate Professor of Sustainability Law, UvA), we collaborated with Klimaatmuseum to develop an installation focused on Vanuatu. This island is heavily affected by climate change, experiencing cyclones and the extinction of crops, which has a massive impact on the population. A group of islanders rose up and successfully led a coalition of 132 countries. The motivation: to seek advice from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the global legal obligations regarding climate action.

Goals

The goals of this collaboration with Klimaatmuseum are:

  • Using art as a means to highlight the urgency of climate justice.
  • Creatively disseminating research conducted by a faculty researcher.

Activities

  • Public brainstorming session with the Climate Museum and our community during the celebration of our five-year anniversary.
  • Project meetings between the Amsterdam Law Hub, Klimaatmuseum, and researcher Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh to shape the final exhibition.
  • Launch at VOX-POP, where the exhibition can be visited until September 13, 2024.
  • The exhibition will then move to another location at Roeterseiland.
