Podcast on the role of art in law

It seems an unlikely combination; the law consisting mainly of rules and laws, and the free and intangible of art. Since we strongly believe that art can lead to new perspectives on the legal sector, we decided to discuss this with experts in the field.

Goal

The goal of this podcast series: to engage with both researchers and practitioners to find out if - and if so - in what ways art plays a role in better understanding the law.

Activities

To approach this topic from multiple perspectives, we talked to Sofia Stolk (TMC Asser Instituut and VU), lawyer Aernoud Bourdrez, artist JULIACKS, founder of TAAK, Theo Tegelaers and Nathalie Dijkman. She's the Amsterdam Law Hub's director and unerringly understands the role art can have in helping us better understand the law. In her private life, she is a photographer herself.

1. Art versus international law

In the first episode, Gabriela talks to Sofia Stolk. Sofia is researching the role of art in international law at TMC Asser Institute (and now VU). Why is it so important that art invites us to change our opinion on international law? And what examples are already there?

2. Artists need lawyers too

The second episode focuses on the legal profession. Lawyer Aernoud Bourdrez made the surprising switch from the Zuidas to the world of art. He explains why, and what it takes to be the lawyer he is. He even wrote a book about it, Think Like a Lawyer, Don't Act Like One.

3. How fluid is the view of our legal system?

In the third and final episode of this series, we talked to American artist JULIACKS and founder of TAAK, Theo Tegelaers. With their art projects, they dare to shine a different light on our justice system. We zoom in on Dutch prisons, and influencing politics.
